The FragranSyn immersive multisensory room inaugurated at the Université de Lorraine

On 6 July 2026, the Université de Lorraine inaugurated the FragranSyn immersive multisensory room in Nancy. A landmark moment for the FragranSyn industrial chair - and for The Room for the Senses®, whose multisensory immersion technology equips this research-dedicated facility.

For The Room for the Senses®, this installation represents far more than a reference case: it illustrates how our solutions meet the most demanding requirements of sensory and behavioural research.

An industrial chair at the crossroads of fragrance and sensory science

The FragranSyn chair is led by Dr Muriel Jacquot. Its ambition: to explore how fragrances influence our emotional and cognitive states when several senses are engaged simultaneously.

The name FragranSyn captures the project's scientific ambition. 

SYN for Synergy - combining several disciplines to decode and predict sensory perception. 

Synaesthesia - a scent can be associated with a colour, a texture or an atmosphere. 

Syntony - when fragrance, memory and environment resonate together to create a harmonious experience.

With a budget of €3.051 million, the project brings together Givaudan - its principal industrial partner -, the Grand Est Region, the Métropole du Grand Nancy and the Université de Lorraine, alongside LIBio, Loria, INTERPSY, MSH Lorraine and the Institut Européen des Antioxydants.

Recreating the environment to measure the real impact of fragrances

To study how a fragrance influences emotions and behaviour under conditions close to real life, credible environments must be recreated: light, sound, images, olfactory atmospheres. This is precisely what the multisensory room makes possible.

Participants are immersed in a variety of usage contexts - a kitchen in the morning, a living room in the evening, a public space - while researchers observe their sensory, emotional and behavioural responses. The scientific challenge is that of ecological validity: the closer the test conditions are to reality, the more representative the data collected.

The chair will also develop explainable AI models capable of predicting the emotional impact of fragrances, combining physical chemistry, neuroscience, sensory science and artificial intelligence.

This choice by a leading industrial chair - backed by a partnership with Givaudan and supported by local authorities and the Université de Lorraine - confirms how well our solutions match the requirements of high-level academic and industrial research.

The inauguration brought together senior institutional representatives: Valérie Debord, Vice-President of the Grand Est Region, Christophe Choserot, Vice-President of the Métropole du Grand Nancy, Hélène Boulanger, President of the Université de Lorraine, as well as representatives of Givaudan.

What this says about sensory research today

The FragranSyn project reflects a deeper shift: academic research and industry increasingly recognise that measuring a sensory response out of context is not enough. What participants feel in a neutral environment can differ significantly from what they experience in a real usage situation.

This need for contextualisation has been at the heart of what we have been developing with The Room for the Senses® from the outset. Seeing fragrance researchers - in a field where environment, memory and emotion are inseparable from perception - choose our solutions for their work is a validation of that approach.

The FragranSyn programme promises to be a particularly fertile research field, at the intersection of fragrance science, neuroscience and contemporary issues of well-being and eco-innovation. We are proud to be one of its technology partners.
